Expect two long days for this weekend class. All materials are included. The class covers starting a fire, forging 101, filing, sanding, differential heat treat, handle making, sheath making, leather work, finishing and sharpening. Each participant leaves with a complete knife and sheath, as well as a forged hook.
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
In this workshop students will learn how to forge a variety of steel utensils from a single piece of material with a focus on design, hammer control, and refined forgings.
In this class, you will learn how to forge, heat treat, grind, and handle a blacksmithing hammer. You will also be making a drift to use for forming the hammer eye. The hammer will by default be a traditional cross pein design, but other types of hammers can also be made if the student desires.
Learn how to move metal. Professional blacksmith Erin Aylor will teach students how to manage a coal forge, identify the proper temperature ranges for working metal and practice various techniques for manipulating hot iron with hammer and anvil, including tapering, squaring, bending, and scrolling.
